A quietly cultured revolution

29 May 2008
Topics: Cultural collections

Collections Trust (formerly MDA) is working with BSI British Standards to create a new Publicly Available Specification (PAS) for the management of cultural collections. PAS 197, due for launch in September, will provide a sector-wide code of practice for Cultural Collections Management to inform the next generation of practitioners.

"The development of this new standard reflects a quiet revolution in the cultural sector," said Nick Poole, chief executive of Collections Trust.

"A new generation of practitioners and volunteers is looking for a practical, proportionate and integrated approach to managing their museum, archive and library collections. Collection Trust's aim is to support the sector as it continues to become more professional, accountable and efficient in the management of collections and the delivery of services to consumers." PAS 197 is intended to integrate with and improve on existing professional standards.
