City of Kitchener gets to grips with the environment

When the city of Kitchener, in the Canadian province of Ontario, decided to act on its air quality, it knew what to do. In its environmental committee's 2006 report Air Quality in Kitchener, it recognized that local governments can play a significant role in addressing air quality, with some regulatory authority over many direct and indirect sources of air pollution.
Examples include defining land use, zoning and transportation policy, and in Kitchener's case, providing services for acquisition, maintenance, repair and disposal of specialized small, medium and heavy duty trucks and equipment used in municipal operations.

Sustainable events standard takes off
Manchester-based Out There Events is among the first companies to participate in a pilot programme, launched by BSI Management Systems in April, to assess the opportunities for creating official certification for BS 8901, the sustainable event management standard.
More than 100 years after BSI was founded - based in part on its work on the standardization of tramway rails - the Group continues to work with the railway industry to maintain and improve its services and equipment. BSI does so by providing assessment and certification services against IRIS (International Railway Industry Standard), the quality standard for the railway industry.
Question: Do companies need to verify their carbon footprint?
Unless a business is regulated by some form of greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting and/or cap-and-trade regulation (as is the case for some 12,000 installations in Europe), rarely is there the need to either calculate or verify the accuracy of a carbon footprint.
